ILLINOIS’ YOUSSEF M. A. HASHASH — 2026 BUCHANAN LECTURE AT TEXAS A&M
What: Join fellow Illini and members of the Texas A&M community as Dr. Youssef M. A. Hashash, Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering and Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, delivers Texas A&M’s 2026 Buchanan Lecture. Dr. Hashash is internationally recognized for his contributions to geotechnical earthquake engineering, numerical modeling, tunneling, and excavation support systems.
When: Friday, October 23, 2026 at 2:00 PM CT. A reception for all participants will follow the lectures.
About the Event: Dr. Hashash’s lecture is titled “A New Era of Empiricism: The Role of AI in Geotechnical Engineering with Selected Applications.” His research group developed DEEPSOIL (now RSSeismic), software used worldwide to evaluate soil response to earthquake shaking. A Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and former President of the ASCE Geo-Institute, Dr. Hashash was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2022, one of the highest professional honors awarded to engineers in the United States.
Also on the Program: Dr. Rodolfo Sancio, Senior Principal Geotechnical Engineer and Operations Vice President at Geosyntec Consultants in Houston, will present an Honor Lecture titled “A Discussion on the Geotechnical Engineering State of the Practice.”
